I am so delighted you have dropped in to learn a bit more about this lovely Feminine Yoga which is suitable for women in every season of their lives.
In this yoga, we connect with the moon cycles and our wombs and we gently flow and relax into asanas which work the glands responsible for hormone production in the body whilst increasing blood and lymph flow in and around the pelvic organs.
Well, let us start by looking at the energies of every human being. Within every person lives a masculine and feminine energy. A
Masculine Energy, is the energy of doing and achieving and including positive traits such as logic, ambition, courage, assertiveness consistency, stability....
Feminine Energy on the other hand is the energy of compassion, empathy, imagination, nurturing, creativity, intuition, desires, emotion......
However, we are in a patriarchal society where we live mostly in our masculine, competing with men in the workplace, climbing the corporate ladder of success, we can be driven and logical and we "push through" even when we are feeling tired and depleted. This doesn't leave us with much time to indulge in our softer, gentle feminine energies, connecting with our bodies, womb space and our cycles.
So, Feminine Yoga is taking the time to practice "Ahimsa" (meaning No Harm and where we practice self-compassion). We connect into our bodies and our amazing womb spaces and see how we are feeling and we practice our yoga based on this and where we are in our womb or moon cycle. And even if you no longer menstruate or no longer have a womb we still connect to the energy of our wombs by following the lunar cycle and the phases of the moon.
The lunar cycle corresponds to the menstrual cycle in that it goes through the different phases over a 29.5 day repeating cycle. It has a profound impact on everything on earth. It controls the ocean tides, it creates light in the night sky and it affects the reproductive cycles of over 700 different species, including us !
The diagram above gives you a brief idea of how the moon and menstrual cycle coincide. Each phase of the moon represents a part of the menstrual cycle. Don't worry if your cycle doesn't match the moon cycle. The more you start connecting with the moon, the more it will come into sync.
You can also use the different energy patterns of the lunar cycle to birth projects in your life. For instance, a good time to birth a project is on the New moon, as the energy builds in to a momentum on the Full Moon. Then the energies start calm down as we travel the Waning Moon and heading towards the Dark Moon. This is when its a good time to complete projects you are working on as your energy will be at a lower status. Listening to how your body feels during these stages is key to staying balanced.
The Dark / New Moon coincides with the Bleed Phase of the Menstrual Cycle. It is a time to retreat, let go of old stuff and bring in the new. It's also when your energy is at its lowest.
The Waxing Moon coincides with the Follicular Phase of the Menstrual Cycle. In this phase, estrogen is building and follicles are growing in the ovaries. You will find your energy building in this phase.
The Full Moon coincides with Ovulation in the Menstrual Cycle. A time when an egg is released from the ovaries. You will feel very energetic in this phase.
The Waning Moon coincides with the Luteal Phase of the Menstrual Cycle. In this phase, progesterone is building to support a pregnancy. Your energy is calming down.
As we said before, the principle of Feminine Yoga is "Self compassion" and we follow the energy patterns based on the moon cycle so the most active classes will be around the Full Moon. The other thing we do in this yoga class, besides practising very relaxing visualisations, pranyama and yoga nidra, is to focus on the Endocrine System and gently flow into those postures which work on the different glands of the body to bring about hormone balance. You will learn proper alignment and relax in postures to gently improve blood flow and lymphatic function in the pelvic area and around the reproductive organs.
